CBS INFORMATION GASOLIN’ – DANISH ROCK-ENERGI ON A HIGH-SPEED LEVEL If ever there has been a Scandinavian sound in rock music Gasolin' are a sure highlight among the grapes to take the “boom”. But a Scandinavian Sound has never excisted, Just as a Mersey-Sound never really excisted. After all that had Beatles and The Undertakers (which you might recall were one of the great groups of that time) is common except the birth place. A boom is always press-hype. And Gasolin’ is so sure hype at all. The reason why they to-day is the most lively act at the rockscene in Denmark as well as being a huge success on the recordmarket is born of the fact that they don’t try to make other people’s music. They are happy being themselves – and because of that relaxed attitude towards music they are not just another frustrated copy of an charttopping American or Eng- lish act. Gasolin’ started as a rockgroup in 1969 – with only a shadow of success. It took the musicians a little over a yer to get themselves together, find their identity on the scene and get so much courage they could start a kind of communication-therapy with the audience. That’s still one of their fi- nest qualities – no matter what happens on stage, if the amplifiers break down, the drums get smashed or there are just 10 people in the audience (which in fact has’nt happened for some years now! ) – they don’t loose their temper. Not to talk about their humour. Like with Frank Zappa you are into some trouble putting a label on them. In 1971 Gasolin’ released their first LP which brought them straight into the Danish charts. In 1972 they released the next album – even higher in the charts. The group has high hopes for their third LP, just released, as from England they got Roy Baker Thomas to produce the album. He has produced Zappa, Lindisfarne and Dr. John before and also in this matter he succesded in getting the originality of the Danish group though in the recordings. But of course Gasolin’ are four individuals with each his own personality and background. Kim Larsen, singer in the band, was a schoolteacher before joining this group. He hasn’t song professional before – but been interes- ted in rockmusic since he was hooked on Little Richard. Franz Beckerlee, guitar and keyboards, has a good reputation in Danish jazz in which he play- ed an important role from 1959-1969. The other members of Gasolin’ calls him “Stone Free” because of his passion for Jimi Hendrix’ expressive guitar- playing. Wili Jönsson plays bass in the group and is a good showman on stage.
